From navigating an organization during COVID-19 to addressing racial injustice with your staff and the community, the July episode of the Stronger by Association podcast features top CEOs about how their associations have adapted in our current crises. Steven C. Anderson, FASAE, CAE, IOM, President and CEO of the National Association of Chain Drug Stores; Rick Pollack, President and CEO of the American Hospital Association; and Shannon Roche, President and CEO of Yoga Alliance, discuss their members’ work to keep people well during the pandemic and every day.

On addressing racial injustice, Anderson said, “We really felt it was an obligation for NACDS to make a public statement, which we did to the industry and to the public. Really more importantly, I think this is where associations are going to be spending more time. Our members of our staff really wanted to know where I as a CEO stood on this.”

This episode also addresses how associations are leading through COVID-19. “I have been really struck by how association leaders and professionals have been playing an incredibly critical role in making the country and, frankly the world, safer and smarter and more secure throughout the pandemic. It has also been really interesting to see how associations from all sectors are filling gaps for the policymakers and municipalities in some of the spaces where the guidance is unclear,” said Roche.

On improving healthcare, Pollack said, “In some cases we are not talking about more money. We are talking about the existing resources and taking them out of the silos and dealing with them in an integrated way that addresses the social determinants of health. It is absolutely critical. You can’t maintain a healthy community, you can’t achieve a healthy society, without dealing with these other elements that affect a persons’ healthcare status.”
