IEEE – Using Technical Knowledge to Make a Difference

The IEEE earned a 2019 ASAE Power of A Gold Award for its MOVE Community Outreach Initiative, an emergency response program committed to supporting relief workers and victims of natural disasters by providing short-term communications, computer, and power solutions for field operations. The American Red Cross provides access and logistical support for IEEE volunteers to provide this assistance.

The project was launched in 2016 and has responded to seven hurricanes, multiple flooding incidents and wildfires, a devastating tornado, and even an eclipse (providing airport communications support). 2017 was particularly active as teams of volunteers were continuously deployed from August 25, 2017, through February 7, 2018, to assist in the preparation and recovery efforts of Hurricane Harvey (Houston, TX), Irma (Florida), and Maria (Puerto Rico).

National Association of State Boating Law Administrators – Reducing Boating Under the Influence

The National Association of State Boating Law Administrators earned a 2019 ASAE Power of A Gold Award for Operation Dry Water, a year-round boating under the influence awareness and enforcement campaign with the mission of reducing the number of alcohol-related accidents and fatalities through increased recreational boater awareness and by fostering a stronger and more visible deterrent to alcohol use on the water.

The program was launched in 2009 in partnership with the U.S. Coast Guard. The Operation Dry Water campaign coordinates on a national level, the saturation of thousands of local, state and federal marine law enforcement officers on the water just before the Fourth of July with the mission of spreading awareness about the dangers of boating under the influence and to facilitate heightened boating under the influence enforcement before a holiday known for drinking, boating, and fatal accidents.

Association Spotlight, brought to you by ASAE and The Power of A, was created to showcase how associations strengthen America and world. The next Power of A Awards entry period begins January 2020.
