ASGE - LogoPhysicians around the world have been provided the equipment and supplies necessary to provide advanced endoscopic care to underserved communities thanks to the efforts of the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy’s (ASGE) Ambassador Program and its dedicated member-volunteers.

ASAE honored ASGE with a 2014 Summit Award for helping to make a better world through providing ready access to advanced medical care techniques to physicians and international centers in developing countries that lack information on therapies in which gastrointestinal endoscopists specialize.

ASGE-Ambassador Logo“Our Ambassador Program aims to decrease severe illness and death from untreated digestive disorders among underserved populations,” said Colleen Schmitt, MD, FASGE, and President of ASGE. “Harnessing the generosity of our members, their vast medical knowledge and the will to serve, ASGE has developed a powerful global program that impacts fellow physicians and the patients they serve.”

ASGE partners with institutions and clinics around the world to bring the Ambassador Program to each destination.  Equipment and supplies necessary to carry out the program are provided, gastrointestinal endoscopists conduct training on a voluntary basis.  Since 2010, nearly 300 physicians have been trained from Nigeria, Kenya, Sudan, Egypt, Vietnam, Taiwan and Southeast Asia, Brazil, Ecuador and the Solomon Islands and over 50 physician volunteers have donated their time to the program.  Up to 10 days of training are provided across a number of ailments and treatments.

ASAE’s Power of A (association) Awards, the industry’s highest honor, recognize the association community’s valuable contributions on the local, national and global level.  The Power of A Awards reward outstanding accomplishments of associations and industry professionals for their efforts to enrich lives, create a competitive workforce, prepare society for the future, drive innovation and make a better world.

Congratulations and thank you to ASGE for filling a vital need for underserved communities, as well as raising the visibility for how the association community enriches the lives of people every day.
