The Frozen Food Foundation is the 501(c)(3) charitable affiliate of the American Frozen Food Institute (AFFI).  In February, the Foundation played host to the 2011 5K Fun Run/Walk presented by Green Giant.  It was the fourth 5K to benefit the Foundation, but the first to be opened to the public.  Nearly 200 youth, teens and families joined AFFI Frozen Food Convention delegates on a 3.1-mile course along the Embarcadero waterfront in San Francisco.

The 5K Fun Run/Walk invites participation from local communities as a means to encourage physical activity among children, adolescents and adults, and showcase the role frozen foods can play in promoting a healthy and active lifestyle.  A highlight reel and promotional video capturing the energy and the spirit of the 2011 event can be found here, and photos from race day can be found here.

The 2011 event was sponsored by Green Giant®, Birds Eye®, Weight Watchers Smart Ones® and Sargento®.  The Produce for Better Health Foundation participated as a partner organization.

Nearly one third of American children are overweight or obese – a rate that has tripled in adolescents and more than doubled in younger children since 1980.  Many factors have contributed to this startling trend, most notably a significant decrease in physical activity during and after school, and changed childhood eating habits.

In February 2010, First Lady Michelle Obama announced an effort to combat childhood obesity through the Let’s Move campaign.  As part of this effort, both the president and the first lady have called upon the food industry to introduce new, more healthful options, cut portion sizes and trim calories in existing products.  Many in the frozen food industry have answered that call.

Through the 5K, contributors to the Frozen Food Foundation are also supporting efforts to encourage physical activity, which is another of the five pillars of the Let’s Move initiative.

Given its focus on scientific research and education regarding the nutritional and safety attributes of frozen foods, the Foundation is well positioned to trumpet the value of frozen foods on behalf of the frozen food industry.  AFFI and the Foundation aspire for the 5K to become a flagship event for the entire frozen food industry that demonstrates to opinion leaders our commitment to leading America’s youth to a healthier future.

The 2012 5K Fun Run will take place Sunday, February 19, in San Diego, Calif.  For information about how you can support the Foundation’s efforts as a 5K community partner or sponsor, please contact Frozen Food Foundation Executive Director Elise Cortina at (703) 821-0770 or
